Change Management vs. Project Management: The People vs. The Plan

Any organizational change has two sides: the technical side and the people side. The technical side involves designing, developing, and delivering the new solution (e.g., a new technology, a new process). The people side involves ensuring that the employees impacted by the change are willing and able to adopt it. Project Management is the discipline for managing the technical side. Change Management is the discipline for managing the people side. While they are often confused or conflated, they are distinct disciplines that must be integrated for a project to achieve its intended business outcomes. Think of it this way: Project Management ensures you build the right solution correctly, while Change Management ensures people actually use that solution to drive business value. Without both working in harmony, even the most technically perfect initiative can fail to deliver its promised ROI.
