A core competency is a strategic-level strength — not a single skill or system, but an integrated bundle of capabilities, know-how, and organizational learning that a company has developed better than its rivals and that materially contributes to the value it delivers. The classic test, drawn from strategic management theory, is threefold: does it provide real customer benefit, is it difficult for competitors to replicate, and can it be leveraged across multiple products, markets, or business units? A strength that fails any of these tests — say, an efficient payroll process — may be well executed, but it is not a core competency because it doesn't differentiate the organization in the market. In business architecture, core competency is often confused with 'capability,' but the two operate at different altitudes. A capability is a discrete, well-defined ability an organization possesses (e.g., 'Underwriting,' 'Claims Processing,' 'Product Configuration') that appears as a node on a capability map. A core competency is a strategic narrative that usually draws on and combines several capabilities, executed at a level of maturity and integration that competitors cannot easily copy.
