Strategic alignment is the degree to which an organization's strategy, capabilities, operating model, and investments are all pointed at the same goals, so that day-to-day work actually delivers on stated business intent.

Strategic alignment is the disciplined connection between what an organization says it wants to achieve (its strategy) and what it actually builds, funds, and operates to get there (its capabilities, value streams, processes, and technology). In business architecture terms, alignment is not a feeling of consensus in a leadership offsite — it is a traceable line from a strategic objective, through the capabilities and value streams that must change to deliver it, down to the specific initiatives, systems, and organizational changes funded to make that happen. When that line exists and can be inspected, an organization has alignment. When strategy sits in a slide deck while the roadmap is driven by legacy priorities, technical debt, or the loudest business sponsor, alignment has broken down even if everyone agrees on the mission statement. Alignment operates at multiple altitudes: strategic-to-capability (do we have, or are we building, the capabilities our strategy requires), capability-to-investment (is the portfolio of projects and budget actually strengthening the capabilities that matter most), and operating-model-to-strategy (is the org structure, governance, and accountability model set up to execute, or is it a legacy artifact from a different era of the business). Business architects typically operationalize this through capability heat maps overlaid with strategic priorities, cross-mappings of initiatives to capabilities, and value stream analysis that exposes where strategic intent stalls in execution. It's important to distinguish strategic alignment from mere strategic communication. A well-articulated strategy that has been broadly communicated is not the same as an aligned organization — alignment requires evidence in the funding decisions, the capability investment priorities, and the operating model itself.

Myth: Strategic alignment is achieved once leadership agrees on and communicates a strategy.
Reality: Agreement and communication are prerequisites, not proof. Alignment must be demonstrated in where budget and staffing actually flow — through capability investment heat maps and initiative-to-capability cross-mapping — not just in the language used in town halls.
Myth: Strategic alignment is primarily an IT responsibility, achieved by making sure systems support the business.
Reality: IT-business alignment is one dimension, but strategic alignment starts upstream of technology, at the level of capabilities, operating model, and value streams.
